This month’s topic will be Medeco pin-tumbler locks. King with give a
short presentation about how they work and how they can be opened
through a variety of methods. He is the inventor of the “Medecoder”
picking and decoding tool and is very proficient at picking these
locks. I’ll be bringing a number of padlocks that use Medeco cylinders
for everyone to see. These are heavy duty armory locks used by the US
Military for securing weapons and ammunition.

In addition, this will be the LAST CHANCE for you to get points in for
our first competition! Whoever has the most points at the end of this
meeting will be crowned the winner and will be awarded a fantastic
prize at the July meeting.

There’s still lockpick sets available (the new one with nice handles)
for anyone interested.

1) Configuration:
Learn how to set up pins for input and output.
Understand the elements of the configuration word.
How to connect the PIC to your circuits.
 
2) Programming:
The complete instruction set. (35 commands!)
Using MPLab, and the simulator.
Program flow.
Bit-masking.
How to mimic instructions that don’t exist.
 
3) Troubleshooting:
Common programming errors.
Common PCB/Breadboard errors.
Debouncing / Output amplification
 
This class will be taught entirely in PIC Assembly, so if you’re thinking about learning Assembly, this will give you an introduction on one of the simplest systems there is. If you are already an x86 Assembly genius, most of the programming will be a piece of cake.
 
By the end, you should be able to make your own blinky-lights projects, read digital input, and control things on a circuit board. I have a few little demo-boards built that we might get to use at the end if people want to mess around with them. If you want your own, tell me and I’ll give you a kit to solder.
 
If people are interested, we can do a second class later on topics like PWM, USART, and ADC.

Remember that LayerOne is coming up. Register through NSL, LA2600, or on the website at http://www.layerone.org. There will be a LOT of lock stuff going on, with many of the big locksport names coming out from all over the country to give presentations at the Lockpicking Village, provide some fun lockpicking competitions, and general dick around and enjoy the conference. I am no longer feeling like a crazy person, so the malwares are back on! Though this month there’s gonna be a twist: this week isn’t gonna be about reversing! Nope, this week is going to be about writing.

I’m going to be going over some basic concepts such as cool places to hide your evil binary, communicating with a command-and-control servers as well as some fun anti-debug/obfuscation things! If you’re into coding at all– or even interested in seeing how the bot folk like to hide in the system’s thickets– this Friday will probably be the malware Friday for you!

This month we’ll be having part 3 of the competition (ending in June) and for those interested a hands on workshop (bring your own tools) for impressioning. Impressioning is an attack where we take a blank key and gather information from the lock to make a working key. The poor man’s toolkit only requires a fine file and a pair of vice grips, but if you want to get GOOD tools (which, in my opinion, make a huge difference) I would recommend the following:

The finer the file the better, and preferrably a swiss, pippin, or round file. Remember: A finer file will allow you to better distinguish impressioning marks, a good grip will let you get better impressioning marks, and the viewer, though optional, does help identifying hard to spot impressioning marks. Impressioning is not very easy to do the first few times, but once you get it down it is a very powerful and relatively easy to perform attack that just takes patience and practice.

I will also have a new batch of lockpick sets if anyone is interested. These are not the same as the ones we have had before and they have a few different types of picks in them. Many people said they would like picks with the reinforced handles, so there are a few of those in the new set. Price for the new set will be 25$.

Tuesdays, open night… bring stuff in to fix (we supply the tools you supply the fixing). We have a pretty good success rate, so far 6~7 laptops fixed and one PS3 that wasnt.

Fridays we have lock picking and malware.

Saturdays, we are going to start build night and general ‘STFU I’m hacking over here’ night… (this Sat is the DIYBio Party!) Where we will put on a movie (sorry Enzo) and build stuff.
